PLAN LAW CLERKSHIP & PRO BONO SCHOLARS PROGRAMS
PLAN is currently accepting applications for 2024-25 Law Clerkships and
2025 Pro Bono Scholars Program placements.
In 2024-25, PLAN Law Clerks and Pro Bono Scholars will:
- Investigate incarcerated individuals' conditions of confinement complaints, complete legal research and writing as to incarcerated individuals' legal rights, and help advocate for corrective action. PLAN Law Clerks and Pro Bono Scholars are assigned a docket of incarcerated individuals who have contacted PLAN to express concerns about the conditions they are experiencing inside. During PLAN placements, Law Clerks and Pro Bono Scholars participate in confidential legal communications with incarcerated service recipients, investigate presenting issues, produce analysis as to relevant legal standards, and work with supervising attorneys to develop and implement responsive legal advocacy strategies.
- Collaborate with a national team of PLAN partners to notify eligible incarcerated and formerly incarcerated voters ("system-impacted voters") of their voting rights under the law and overcome any barriers they encounter when exercising these rights. This assistance will include:
- Working under the supervision of PLAN attorneys, and in close coordination with attorneys from PLAN partner organizations, to: 1) determine system-impacted individuals' voting eligibility (or lack thereof), and 2) help these voters challenge barriers to the exercise of these rights or reinstate their voting rights if necessary.
- Completing legal research and writing that advises system-impacted voters of recent changes in law that affect their voting rights.
